The Museum Reinhard Ernst opened in 2024 and was designed by Pritzker Prize laureate Fumihiko Maki. It is dedicated exclusively to abstract art created after 1945. The museum is privately funded. The interior architectural concept of the Museum Reinhard Ernst (mre) is largely defined by the deliberate use and guidance of daylight and sunlight. A central, bright atrium forms the spatial core of the building. Surrounding galleries, staircases, and walkways function as spaces for movement and orientation, offering a variety of visual connections. While the building appears outwardly as a closed, shimmering white structure, it opens up inside as a light-filled and inviting space. Instead of a prescribed visitor route, a sequence of clearly structured rooms allows for intuitive orientation and individually chosen paths. Indirect daylight from circulation areas, along with targeted north-facing openings, consciously incorporates changing light conditions into the perception of the artworks. The internal organization follows a clear, service-oriented dramaturgy. The ground floor houses public areas such as the foyer, restaurant, shop, and the Maki Forum event space, forming a communicative base. The exhibition areas are located on the upper floors and are spatially separated from everyday operations. Peripheral functions are efficiently grouped and recede in favor of the overall spatial experience.
