»September 5« in Venice

News 07. Aug 24

Thriller has been set as opener of the Venice Film Festival’s cutting edge Horizons and Horizons Extra section.

On 28 August, the thriller celebrates its world premiere as the opening film of the section, which is known for picking up on new trends in international film and presenting rather unconventional works.

In the time span of one day, Tim Fehlbaum's third directorial work tells the story of the live coverage by the sports team of US broadcaster ABC at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, when eleven Israeli athletes where taken hostage. The multi-award-winning Swiss director tells the story of the Olympic assassination attempt from an unusual perspective. Never before has this historic event, which also marked the zero hour of transnational terrorism, been made into a film for cinema from Germany. What began as pure sports coverage developed on that day into a live broadcast that would change the world forever. ‘September 5’ poses the question of the responsibility of the media then and now and offers a gripping look at the role of the media in times of crisis.

The thriller stars Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch. ‘September 5’ is a co-production of BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion, Projected Picture Works, Constantin Film and ERF Edgar Reitz Filmproduktion. Director Tim Fehlbaum also wrote the screenplay together with Moritz Binder. The visual effects were created by Frankfurt based studio LAVALabs. Young Hessian talent was also involved in the shoot: David Dröge gained experience in the field of sound as a STEP intern.

Constantin Film will be releasing the drama in German cinemas from 7 November and the film will also be released in the USA via Republic Pictures. We supported the production of ‘September 5’ with 160,000 euros.
