Hessen Film & Media Awards First Film Friendliness Label to the City of Marburg

07. Mar 25

Hessen Film & Media – the primary contact for film funding in the state of Hesse – has awarded the City of Marburg with its new film friendliness label.

With the "FILMFRIENDLY LOCATION" label, Hessen Film & Media recognizes cities, municipalities, and individual filming locations that demonstrate exceptional film friendliness and actively support film productions, making shoots easier to carry out.

The first award of its kind was presented yesterday under the patronage of State Minister Timon Gremmels to the Mayor of the university city of Marburg, Dr. Thomas Spies.

»To make great cinema happen in Hesse, film crews rely on the dedicated support of municipalities, administrations, service centers, and public authorities,« said Anna Schoeppe, CEO of Hessen Film & Media.

»Over the past years, the City of Marburg has taken a pioneering role through its extraordinary commitment and has set new standards for film friendliness in our state. Productions such as Ildikó Enyedi’s ›Silent Friend‹ or the Amazon Prime series ›Perfekt Verpasst‹ have not only benefited from the excellent filming conditions – Marburg plays a central role in both works, not as an anonymous backdrop, but as a vibrant, narrative-rich setting with a distinctive charm.«

»This authenticity and the extraordinary commitment of the city’s departments make Marburg a role model for film friendliness in Hesse.«

»I am very pleased that we can now highlight and honor this commitment with the new »FILMFRIENDLY LOCATION« label from the Film Commission Hessen.«

Minister of Arts and Culture Timon Gremmels emphasized the locational benefits of film shoots for cities:

»Filming in Hesse not only creates cultural value and fosters identification with our region as a film location, but also strengthens the economy and tourism. The City of Marburg has recognized this potential and strategically positioned itself as a film-friendly location. I congratulate the City of Marburg and Mayor Dr. Thomas Spies on this well-deserved award.«

»The new label from Hessen Film & Media highlights the benefits and opportunities that film productions offer to cities, municipalities, and other locations – and serves as valuable pioneering work in interdisciplinary location marketing.«

»I hope that many towns across Hesse will follow the call for greater film friendliness, allowing us to further enhance Hesse’s appeal as an ideal filming location far beyond the metropolitan region.«

Mayor of Marburg Dr. Thomas Spies, who accepted the award on behalf of his city, stated:

»The development of Marburg as an emerging film location is a clear reflection of our cultural diversity, our distinctive atmosphere, and the economic strength of the region. We have a great deal to offer and are proud to welcome filmmakers from around the world to our modern and historic university city. The entire region’s hotels, gastronomy, retail, and service sectors benefit from this – which is why we are fully committed to advancing Marburg’s growth as a film city.«

»We are proud that, through this commitment, Marburg is now the first city to receive the designation as a film-friendly city.«

Hesse is increasingly establishing itself as a sought-after filming location. From Kassel to the Bergstraße region, regional, national, and more and more international film and series productions are finding ideal settings for their projects – which are later shown at renowned festivals around the world as well as in local cinemas. The Film Commission Hessen supports this development through its project FILM IN HESSEN, which promotes networking between the film industry, cities, municipalities, and city marketing initiatives. The goal is to create optimal filming conditions and open up the entire state as a filming destination. In addition, the »FILMFRIENDLY LOCATION« label provides visibility for dedicated filming sites and helps productions find the perfect setting for their films or series.

The university city of Marburg has earned a strong reputation as a film-friendly location. Most recently, the internationally acclaimed director Ildikó Enyedi shot her film ›Silent Friend‹ in Marburg, featuring international stars such as Tony Leung and Bond girl Léa Seydoux – a tribute to the city’s unique charm. The successful Amazon Prime series ›Perfekt Verpasst‹, starring Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka, also benefited from Marburg’s excellent filming conditions.

The very first »FILMFRIENDLY LOCATION« label was awarded yesterday during a press event at Cineplex Marburg.

Das erste Label »FILMFRIENDLY LOCATION« wurde gestern im Rahmen einer Presseveranstaltung im Cineplex Marburg verliehen.
