Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt

Mathildenhöhe was founded in 1897 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse as a centre for reformist movements in architecture, art and craftsmanship. The artists’ colony was a key location for the development of Art Nouveau and modern architecture in Europe. In 2021, Mathildenhöhe was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, underlining its global significance as a pioneer of modernism.
