Townhall Marburg

In Marburg’s Upper Town, right on the historic market square and surrounded by half-timbered houses, stands the town hall, built between 1512 and 1527. The three-storey building is in the late Gothic style. A striking feature is the hexagonal stair tower in the centre of the town hall’s façade, which has its own entrance. Above this tower sits the richly decorated roof gable, which was added in 1581/1582 and houses the town hall clock. Inside, there are offices and meeting rooms, as well as the historic town hall chamber, which can seat up to 120 people, and on the ground floor, a banquet hall used for exhibitions. In the basement, the outlines of a market hall and a horse trough can still be seen. A notable feature is the two well-preserved prison cells with bunks, as well as a historic dungeon.
