Eberbach Monastery

The former Cistercian abbey, which is almost 900 years old, is a magical place where tradition and modernity come together in a unique way. Founded in 1136, the monastic community – which initially consisted of twelve brothers – quickly developed into one of Germany’s most important monasteries. The Eberbach Abbey, a listed cultural monument, is still characterised today by the striking simplicity of its Romanesque and early Gothic architecture and is one of the best-preserved historic monastic complexes in Europe. In 1985–1986, the abbey became world-famous as the filming location for the sensational adaptation of Umberto Eco’s bestseller "The Name of the Rose".

The site is now managed by the non-profit Kloster Eberbach Foundation, whose core remit is the protection and preservation of the site. The Kloster Eberbach Foundation generally makes the monastery’s premises available for film and photographic shoots. Part of the Foundation’s remit is to ensure the long-term preservation of the architectural and cultural monument that is Kloster Eberbach through moderate, appropriate and careful use of the site. In particular, the Foundation is responsible for ensuring the protection, upkeep and maintenance of the monastery. For this reason, it must be able to exercise binding influence over the nature and scope of the planned filming and photography. This is done within the framework of an agreement regarding permission for film and photography shoots. To ensure that authorisation can be issued promptly, the email should contain the following information: details of the contact person for the film or photography team, including contact details; the number of people involved; the date and time of the shoot; the location of the shoot; and the purpose of the shoot.
