Witzenhausen

Between Kassel and Göttingen, in the border triangle (Hesse, Lower Saxony, Thuringia), lies the beautiful cherry town on the Werra in the north of the Werra-Meißner district. Witzenhausen is known beyond the borders of Hesse as the cherry town Witzenhausen is home to one of the largest cherry growing areas in Europe. Every year, from the second half of April to the beginning of May, the landscape around the half-timbered town of Witzenhausen is transformed into a brilliant white sea of blossoms from over 100,000 cherry trees. More to offer than cherries “Cherries” are by no means the only thing that the small town of 8,500 inhabitants has to offer: Whether it's an attractive old town with impressive half-timbered buildings, medieval castles or unusual activities around the meandering Werra (hiking, cycling, canoeing and much more) - there's something for everyone here! ... The smallest university town in Germany Together with 16 rural districts (total population: 16,200), it is a hotspot when it comes to a lifestyle close to nature. And not just thanks to the Department of Agricultural Sciences. In the certified organic region and Fairtrade town there are numerous regional and organically produced foods. Witzenhausen has been an organic town since 2017. There is a long tradition; the first chair for organic farming in Germany was established in Witzenhausen.
